Whether you're doing a quick headlight bulb replacement or a full aftermarket headlight installation, the process is straightforward once you know which job you're actually doing because they're not the same thing. Or, if you're ready to leave bulb replacements behind entirely, Auto Addict USA's DOT-approved LED Projector assemblies are a direct plug-and-play upgrade. There are no bulbs to replace and no burnouts to worry about.

This guide covers: a fast bulb swap for blown OEM bulbs and a step-by-step walkthrough for installing a complete aftermarket headlight assembly. Watch the Auto Addict USA video below, then jump to the section that matches your job.

What You'll Need for Headlight Bulb Replacement

Here’s a quick checklist to help you get started on your headlight bulb replacement. It’s a quick 10-minute job that is easy to do on your own.

Replacement Checklist:

  • Replacement Bulb: Ensure you have the correct size as listed in your vehicle’s manual. The bulb type varies by vehicle.

  • Gloves: Nitrile and cloth gloves are recommended. Gloves are crucial to prevent skin oils from causing the new halogen bulb to burn out prematurely.

  • Screwdriver Set: A Phillips or flathead screwdriver is needed to remove screws holding the assembly or covers in place.

  • Socket Wrench and Ratchet Set: Often needed to remove the headlight housing.

  • Needle-nose Pliers: Useful for disconnecting stubborn wiring harnesses.

  • Safety Glasses: To protect your eyes from debris.

  • Headlight Restoration Kit (Optional): This is recommended if your lens is cloudy or yellowed.

Auto Addict USA’s LED Projector headlights are engineered as a true plug-and-play assembly. The wiring harness connects directly to your factory connector, so butt connectors and wire splicing aren't required for our units.

A full assembly requires more tools and equipment than what’s listed above. Skip to the aftermarket installation guide below to learn how you can install your own assembly. Be sure to check the owner's manual or part lookup before buying new parts.

How to Replace a Headlight Bulb — Step by Step

  1. Confirm the correct bulb type. Check your owner's manual or run a part lookup to determine which bulb you’ll need. The H11, 9005, H7, and H4 are common, but fitment varies by make, model, and year.

  2. Turn off the vehicle and open the hood. Locate the headlight housing from behind the hood. Most bulbs are accessible without removing the assembly.

  3. Disconnect the wiring harness. Press the release tab and pull the connector free from the bulb socket.

  4. It’s time to remove the old bulb. Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise and pull it out of the housing. Note the orientation before removing.

  5. Install the new bulb. Handle halogen bulbs with a cloth or gloves, as skin oils shorten the bulb life. Align and twist clockwise until locked.

  6. Reconnect the harness and test. Click the connector back in and test the low beam, high beam, and turn signal before closing the hood.

What You'll Need for Aftermarket Headlight Installation

A complete assembly swap requires more tools than a traditional bulb replacement. It’s a more involved job that takes about 45–60 minutes to complete, but it can still be a clean DIY job.

Aftermarket Headlight Checklist:

  • Socket Wrench Set: 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm sockets are required for headlight bolts.

  • Screwdrivers: Phillips and flathead screwdrivers are recommended for plastic clips and screws.

  • Trim Removal Tool: Helpful for removing bumper clips without risking damage.

  • Gloves: To prevent oils from your hands from damaging new bulbs and to protect your hands as you work.

  • Microfiber Cloth: To remove dirt and debris as you work on your car.

  • Wire Harness and Fuse Tap: Often needed for connecting DRLs or LED upgrades to the ignition power source.

  • Electrical Tape and Zip Ties: For securing new wiring and ensuring clean, safe connections.

  • Dielectric Grease: To protect electrical connections from moisture and corrosion.

  • Butt Connectors and a Crimping Tool: For splicing wires if plug-and-play connectors are not used.

LED upgrades may require a load resistor to prevent hyper-flash on the turn signal circuit. Check with your aftermarket parts expert for more information.

How to Install Aftermarket Headlights — Step by Step

  1. Confirm generation-specific fitment. Verify the aftermarket assembly matches your exact model year. Headlight mounting sizes vary between generations.

  2. Open the hood. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and pop the hood.

  3. Remove the headlight assembly hardware. Based on your car, you might have to remove the grille and the front bumper cover.

  4. Remove the old headlight assembly. Use the screwdriver, the socket wrench set, and the trim removal tool to access components and remove the trim panels. For example, on a 5th and 6th-generation Camaro, the front bumper will need to be removed completely in order to access the bolts used to secure the headlight assembly.

  5. Disconnect the headlight assembly wiring. Squeeze the locking tabs and unplug the wiring connectors for high and low beams, as well as the turn signals.

  6. Remove the headlight bulb sockets. The electrical socket or connectors are on the back of the old headlight assembly. Turn the socket or connector counterclockwise to unlock it from the housing. Or, press the release tab to pull it out.

  7. Remove the old headlight assembly wiring harness. Slide the headlight housing forward and out. You might have to rock it gently to remove it.

  8. Install the bulbs. Mount the ballasts securely, connect the new harnesses, and use dielectric grease to prevent corrosion.

  9. Replace the headlight assembly wiring harness. Plug the electrical components back into the new headlight assembly. Make sure it's placed correctly and that the release tabs are engaged.

  10. Install the new headlight assembly. Place the new assembly into the mounting location. Secure the mounting fasteners, then align locating pins, tabs, or guides with the holes and slots in the vehicle frame. Align the assembly properly, as this will impact visibility.

  11. Test Your Headlights. The beam aim check is a final check to ensure your aftermarket assemblies are aimed correctly after installation. Park on a leveled surface 25 feet from a wall, measure the height of the headlight center, and mark it on the wall. The low-beam cutoff line should sit roughly 2–4 inches below this mark. Open the hood and make adjustments as needed.

Upgrade to LED Projector Headlights — No More Bulb Replacements

Traditional halogen and even standard LED bulb swaps still leave you on a replacement cycle. Auto Addict USA's LED Projector assemblies are built differently. Our assemblies are designed with bright LED panels that are integrated directly into a DOT-approved projector housing, so there's no separate bulb to burn out, no socket to twist, and no replacement schedule to track.

These are a plug-and-play fit for a Camaro or Mustang. Connect to your factory harness, bolt in, and you're done. The projected beam is sharper, brighter, and designed to outlast the life of your build.

Tips for a Clean Headlight Install

  • Avoid LED hyper flash. Installing load resistors will simulate less power, allowing the turn signal circuit to work properly.

  • Achieve the best beam pattern. Select only high-quality LEDs with adjustable collars. You’ll be able to re-aim the headlamp housing if needed.

  • Ensure generation fitment. Check with your aftermarket parts provider to make sure you have the right LED bulb for your make and model. Some bulbs are too long or too bulky to fit.

  • Proper halogen handling. Touching the glass bulb risks leaving oil, which creates hot spots. This will cause early failure or shattering. Be sure to use gloves during the installation process.

  • Consider LED Projector assemblies for a permanent solution. Unlike replaceable bulb setups, Auto Addict USA's integrated LED Projector headlights eliminate the risk of a bulb going out. Built-in DOT-rated LED panels deliver a lasting, high-output beam without the maintenance.
